Armyworms are primarily native to southern states like Texas or parts of the Midwest. I suspect the recent rain fall we had on the 18th of from a hurricane down south brought these pests (moth form or egg form) into our lawns. Any research on these pests conclude of them chewing their way through entire football field within 3 to 4 days. The end result of what I have seen in a few lawns treated is that it looks like the customer mowed their lawn on the lowest possible setting. They do damage by eating the leaf tissue from your lawn. The roots and crown of your lawn are still there and time will tell if your lawn will be able to recover. Some factors that might mitigate damage would include, quick use of additional insecticide through out the season, mowing tall, cooler temperatures and watering.
What to do?
If you currently have:
1. Brown areas in your lawn
2. "Rapidly growing" brown areas in your lawn
It is highly recommended to get additional insecticide services as soon as possible to help protect your lawn.
*** Armyworms, hence their name, will march right across lawns no matter if you had grub control applied or not.
